What are pre-approved housing designs and what is the benefit of using them?
Pre-approved housing designs are one way the City is working to make it easier and faster for residents and developers to construct new homes that meet our existing zoning and building requirements.
The benefits of using pre-approved housing designs include:
Why is the City of Charlottetown developing pre-approved housing designs?
While the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has put out a comprehensive housing design catalogue with region-specific designs, the City of Charlottetown wants to make sure we have designs that fit with the character of our neighbourhoods.
Charlottetown is well-known for its unique and historic character, and we want to make sure that is represented as we continue to grow and develop.
How will the City ensure that the character of existing neighbourhoods is maintained?
The City has hired two consulting firms - Passive Design Solutions and UPLAND Planning + Design Studio - to develop a series of pre-approved housing designs that fit our community. As part of their work, they have completed an architectural survey of the neighbourhoods in Charlottetown and have developed an inventory of key character and design elements.
The final Pre-Approved Housing Design catalogue will include designs for Accessory Dwelling Units and Gentle Infill units, and each building type will include two different styles to celebrate Charlottetown's rich history and vibrant communities.
How will I be able to access the housing designs once they are complete?
Once complete, the pre-approved housing designs will be publicly available through the City website and by request. Stay tuned for more details as the project progresses!
