The City of Charlottetown invites you to shape the future of Public Art in our city!

The City of Charlottetown is leading an update of the Public Art Policy to meet the objectives of the City of Charlottetown’s Public Art Plan: Making Public Art a Priority, the City’s new Cultural Policy, and the Strategic Plan.

Public art refers to a temporary or permanent artwork in any media created by an artist or artist group that is, has been, or will be sited or staged in a public space, and is acquired in compliance with the City of Charlottetown’s Public Art Policy.

The latest public art policy was updated in 2020. Since then, a new cultural staff position and policy have been created, necessitating an update to the document to ensure successful implementation.

The final document will enable Council, city staff, and the City’s Arts Advisory Board to make strategic decisions on public art and support the implementation of the City’s Public Art Plan.

Updating the public art policy will involve community and stakeholder collaboration to ensure Charlottetown’s artists, diverse community members, the cultural sector, elected officials, City staff, and other community leaders have the opportunity to have their voices heard.

What Has Been Done So Far?

The City hosted a free week-long interactive exhibit and engagement on public art in Charlottetown at The Guild in February 2025. Participants were invited to share their vision for public art in Charlottetown, place a dot on a map of where they want to see public art, and explore the new Public Art Inventory.

A What We Heard Report is available in the “Documents” section of this page.

A public survey was also issued and made public from August 2 to September 19, 2025. The survey asked residents about:

  • Their connection to the arts and public art in Charlottetown
  • The kind of public art the community would like to see and where they would like like to see it
  • Residents' vision for public art

The feedback from this survey will inform the development and direction of the draft public art policy, specifically in the vision, guiding principles, and priorities of the policy.

Staff also set up an information booth on the Public Art Policy at several community events in Charlottetown in August and September, including the Downtown Market Charlottetown, Art in the Open, and the Charlottetown Farmer's Market.

What's Next?

The Public Art Policy is currently being drafted before it is presented to the Arts Advisory Board, then Charlottetown City Council for approval.

It is estimated that the policy will be presented to Council for approval in the Winter of 2025.

Stay tuned for further updates!
