Overview

The City of Charlottetown is completing a comprehensive review and update of the current Heritage Preservation Bylaw. This bylaw is used to guide City Council, the Planning and Heritage Committee, Heritage Board and staff in the strategic management and decision-making process for the protection and conservation of heritage resources in the City of Charlottetown.

This project will include a comprehensive review to inform recommendations to enhance the Heritage Preservation Bylaw, focusing on strengthening measures for protecting and conserving heritage resources. This will include but is not limited to, refining the Bylaw to offer greater clarity, specificity, and actionable guidance to ensure the practical preservation of the City’s historical assets. This bylaw update is an opportunity to identify areas for improvement, opportunities for modernization, and enhance regulatory alignment with the Zoning & Development Bylaw, municipal Official Plan and provincial regulations.

    The City of Charlottetown is reviewing and updating its Heritage Preservation Bylaw to ensure it aligns with our new Official Plan and reflects the shared values of our community. Charlottetown is growing rapidly, with an estimated population increase of 22% between 2021 and 2025.

    Your feedback is vital to help the City balance conservation efforts with housing affordability, economic sustainability and rapid urban growth.
