The City of Charlottetown has received provincial approval on the Official Plan! It is now considered fully adopted and in effect as of March 13, 2026. The Official Plan can be viewed in the documents folder of this page.
July 2025
Charlottetown City Council approved the draft Official Plan at a meeting on July 22. The updated Plan replaces the previous version from 1999 and positions Charlottetown for sustainable growth while ensuring the preservation of the city’s unique natural and historic assets.
The plan was developed over two and a half years and involved extensive public consultation, including online surveys, email submissions, in-person and virtual open houses, and targeted stakeholder meetings and interviews. Thank you to those who participated in the consultation process!
About the Plan
The City of Charlottetown has a new Official Plan – the City’s long-term plan for how land is used and developed in the community. The new Official Plan is an opportunity to address, through planning policy, a number of growth-related challenges facing Charlottetown today and in the future. The purpose of the City’s new Official Plan is to establish the municipality's general land use planning policies and ensure that growth is coordinated and meets the needs of the community.
The new plan also provides the framework for establishing municipal zoning bylaws, update secondary plans and create design standards and guidelines. Taken together, the new Official Plan will serve as a roadmap for how Charlottetown will grow and develop over the next 20 years.
